Section IVAbout the 2026 Air Force PFRA

Beginning 1 March 2026, the Department of the Air Force transitioned to a redesigned Physical Fitness Readiness Assessment (PFRA) under DAFMAN 36-2905. The assessment moves to a twice-yearly cadence and replaces the legacy 1.5-mile run with a longer, more endurance-focused 2-mile run (or the 20-meter HAMR shuttle).

From 1 March – 30 June 2026 all tests are diagnostic so Airmen can adapt to the new standards. Official testing for record resumes on 1 July 2026. Airmen may elect to convert any diagnostic score from this window into an official record.

Composite total = 100 points. Pass requires ≥ 75 overall and ≥ 60% of the maximum on every scored component.

Section VIIIFrequently Asked Questions

When does the new PT test take effect?+
Diagnostic testing began 1 March 2026. Official scoring for record resumes 1 July 2026.
How often will Airmen test?+
Twice per year (every six months) under the new bi-annual cadence.
What replaced the 1.5-mile run?+
A 2-mile run, or the alternative 20-meter High Aerobic Multi-Shuttle Run (HAMR).
Can I substitute exercises?+
Yes. Strength: standard or hand-release push-ups. Core: sit-ups, cross-leg reverse crunches, or forearm plank. Cardio: 2-mile run or HAMR.
What is a passing score?+
A composite of at least 75/100, AND at least 60% of the maximum on every scored component.
How is body composition scored?+
Waist-to-Height Ratio (waist ÷ height in inches). Lower ratios earn more points; the component is worth up to 20 points (20% of the total).
Are diagnostic scores ever recorded?+
Yes — Airmen may elect to convert a diagnostic test taken between March and June 2026 into an official record.
Who administers and certifies the test?+
Unit Fitness Program Managers and the new Master Fitness Leaders (career field 3FI) following a two-week formal course.
What is a good PT score in the Air Force?+
A score of 90–100 is considered "Excellent." Most Airmen aim for at least 80 to leave a buffer above the 75-point passing threshold. Scores below 75, or below 60% on any single component, constitute a failure regardless of the total.
What happens if you fail your PT test in the Air Force?+
A failed PFRA results in placement in the Fitness Improvement Program (FIP) and a mandatory retest within 90 days. Repeated failures can lead to unfavorable performance reports, ineligibility for promotion and PME, and referral for administrative separation. PT results are now included in officer and enlisted performance reports.
How many pushups do you need to pass the Air Force PT test?+
The minimum number of push-ups to pass depends on your age and gender. For example, a male under 25 needs at least 30 push-ups in 1 minute (scoring 9 of 15 points). A female under 25 needs at least 15. Use the scoring tables on this page or select your profile in the calculator above for your exact threshold.
What is the new Air Force fitness test?+
The new Air Force fitness test is called the Physical Fitness Readiness Assessment (PFRA), effective 1 March 2026 under DAFMAN 36-2905. It replaced the legacy PFA and includes four components: a 2-mile run (or HAMR shuttle), push-ups, sit-ups (or plank), and body composition measured by Waist-to-Height Ratio. Airmen must test twice per year.
How is the Air Force PT score calculated?+
Your USAF PT score is a composite of 100 points: cardio is worth up to 50 points, body composition up to 20, strength up to 15, and core endurance up to 15. Each component is scored by comparing your result to the official PFRA chart for your age and gender. You need a composite of 75 or higher AND at least 60% of the max on every component to pass.
