When Is My Next Air Force PT Test? Due-Date Calculator

Your next PFRA due month under AFMAN 36-2905 for every situation the manual covers, plus how many diagnostic PFRAs you have left and when to take a decoupled waist measurement.

The short answer

  • After an Excellent or Satisfactory PFRA you’re due again in 6 months, or 12 months in the Guard and Reserve¶3.10.1¶3.10.2¶3.4.2.
  • After an Unsatisfactory or DNF, retest by the end of the 3rd month; earlier needs your commander’s approval¶3.10.3.
  • Coming off a profile or back from deployment, you get a one-month Reconditioning or Acclimatization Period and are due the month after it¶4.1.2¶4.1.5. After pregnancy (20+ weeks), you’re due the 13th month after delivery ¶4.1.4.
  • Your UFPM sets the official date in myFitness, the only authorized scheduling system¶2.28.4¶7.1. This page shows you how the rules work so you can check it.

The rules

  • You choose official or diagnostic only after the PFRA Administrator gives you your composite score.¶3.8.1

  • At most two diagnostics logged in any 365 days (ARC: one). With two logged, you must accept the result as official.¶3.8.2

  • A diagnostic is still entered in myFitness, but without the results; only an official PFRA records them.¶3.8.3

  • Only during the current cycle, and no earlier than one month before your scheduled assessment.¶3.4.4

  • The WHtR isn't decoupled for a diagnostic: take the waist measurement on the same day as the rest.¶3.4.4

Where the AFMAN is unclear

  • The one-month limit sits in the unit-testing paragraph, and the diagnostic paragraph repeats it only for ARC members, so it isn't clear whether it also limits individual testing outside unit test days. The SAF/MR memo of 26 Feb 2026 states it generally; ask your FAC how they apply it.¶3.4.4¶3.8.1

  • The AFMAN sets the earliest date, not a latest one within your due month. Ask your FAC how late in the month they run diagnostics.¶3.4.4

  • "Within a 365-day period" is counted here as the 365 days ending on your planned date.¶3.8.2

The service-wide diagnostic period of 1 March to 30 June 2026 was a one-time rollout window (af.mil, 6 Jan 2026). The standing rules are the ones above.¶3.8

The rules

  • You may take the WHtR at least one and no more than five duty days before the other components.¶3.1.1¶3.4.3¶3.15.4.1

  • You may also take it on the same day as the rest of the test. Decoupling is your choice, and you can't be directed to test congruently.¶3.1.1¶3.4.3

  • Body composition is always the first component; the FAC/UFAC enters the decoupled result and the rest when complete.¶3.15.4¶3.15.4.1

  • Miss the window and the PFRA is Did Not Finish: a full reassessment, and DNF results as Unsatisfactory.¶3.4.3¶3.15.4.1¶3.10.4

  • A diagnostic PFRA can't be decoupled: take the WHtR the same day.¶3.4.4

Where the AFMAN is unclear

  • "Duty day" isn't defined. Weekends, holidays and family days vary by unit, so this tool skips what you tell it to. Your UFPM or FAC has the final say.¶3.1.1

WHtR is the waist-to-height ratio, truncated to two decimals¶3.15.4.2. See the WHtR guide for scoring.

Regular Air Force members meet two assessment cycles a year. If your wing (host or tenant) commander directs unit testing, they approve a bi-annual schedule of unit assessments, and the AFMAN recommends basing it on local conditions such as winter weather or thermal stress¶3.4.1. Without unit testing, you test in 6-month increments: the AFMAN’s own example is a test due in August 2026, next due in February 2027¶3.4.1.

Take the PFRA during your assigned unit assessment or the date or month myFitness assigns¶3.2.4. Miss it and you’re Not Ready and must assess immediately¶3.10.5Table 3.3. myFitness is the only authorized system to schedule and score PFRAs ¶7.1, and your UFPM sets your next due date¶2.28.4.

Reconditioning Period vs Acclimatization Period

Both are one calendar month counted from the day after an event, and in most cases your PFRA is due the month after the period ends.

  • Reconditioning Period: starts the day after your AF Form 469 fitness restrictions end, so you can train before testing¶3.10.9. Your UFPM sets the next due date from it¶2.28.4.
  • Acclimatization Period: starts the day after you return to duty or home station ¶3.10.8. The AFMAN applies it after a deployment¶4.1.5, a PCS ¶4.3.1.1, IRR status for ARC members¶4.1.6 and a cancelled separation order ¶4.1.7. For other official travel, it’s granted where “an increase/decrease in altitude (greater than 5k feet) and change in climate is greater than 30 days”¶3.10.8. That sentence is hard to parse, so ask your UFPM whether a TDY qualifies.

Rollout Timeline: What the Air Force Announced

These dates come from Air Force announcements and a SAF/MR memorandum, not from AFMAN 36-2905. The AFMAN itself names no cycle months: your wing sets the unit schedule, or you test in 6-month increments ¶3.4.1. The March to June 2026 diagnostic period was a one-time rollout window; the standing diagnostic rules are in paragraph 3.8¶3.8.

  • · superseded

The Air Force announced the new program: a testing pause from 1 January 2026, new standards on 1 March 2026, a diagnostic period, and official testing from 1 September 2026. Parts of this were later replaced. af.mil, 24 Sep 2025

  • Revised plan: the diagnostic period would run 1 March to 30 June 2026, with official testing from 1 July 2026. af.mil, 6 Jan 2026

  • SAF/MR Directive-Type Memorandum: Regular Air Force members test twice a calendar year, in cycles of March to October and October to March; ARC members once a year. Diagnostics no earlier than one month before the scheduled test. Members could elect to convert a diagnostic score to an official one, moving their next PFRA to 6 months after that assessment. SAF/MR DTM, 26 Feb 2026 (PDF)

  • The program announcement pointed members to the PFRA Due Date Matrix on myFSS, which needs a login. af.mil, 27 Feb 2026

  • AFMAN 36-2905 published, superseding DAFMAN 36-2905 (22 April 2022). Its rules are the ones this page applies. AFMAN 36-2905 (PDF)

  • Official (record) PFRA scoring began. af.mil, 23 Jul 2026

  • Under the memorandum's cycle months, the October to March cycle begins. SAF/MR DTM, 26 Feb 2026 (PDF)

Frequently Asked Questions

When is my next Air Force PT test due?

After an Excellent or Satisfactory PFRA you're due again in 6 months; Air Reserve Component (Guard and Reserve) members are due in 12 months (AFMAN 36-2905 paras. 3.10.1, 3.10.2 and 3.4.2). The AFMAN's own example: a test due in August 2026 is next due in February 2027 (para. 3.4.1). If your wing directs unit testing, your unit's bi-annual schedule sets the month (para. 3.4.1). After an Unsatisfactory or Did Not Finish you're due again in 3 months, and testing earlier needs your commander's approval (paras. 3.10.3 and 3.10.4). Your UFPM sets the official date in myFitness (paras. 2.28.4 and 7.1).

What is the Reconditioning Period after a profile?

It's one calendar month counted from the day after your AF Form 469 fitness restrictions end (AFMAN 36-2905 para. 3.10.9). While a component or composite exemption is in effect you're on PFRA Hold and can't take an official PFRA, and your next PFRA is due the month after the Reconditioning Period (paras. 3.10.6 and 4.1.2). Example: a profile that expires on 10 October 2026 gives a Reconditioning Period of 11 October to 10 November, so the PFRA is due in December 2026. Modality exemptions, where you're cleared for an alternative exercise, don't use PFRA Hold (paras. 3.10.7 and 4.1.3).

What is the Acclimatization Period?

It's one calendar month counted from the day after you return to duty or home station (AFMAN 36-2905 para. 3.10.8). After a deployment your next PFRA is due the month after it (para. 4.1.5). After a PCS you're allowed the Acclimatization Period from your arrival to complete a PFRA (para. 4.3.1.1). After a deployment you may volunteer to test during it, but you can't be directed to (para. 4.1.5).

How many diagnostic PFRAs can I take?

No more than two logged in any 365-day period, or one for Air Reserve Component members (AFMAN 36-2905 para. 3.8.2). You decide official or diagnostic only after the PFRA Administrator gives you your composite score (para. 3.8.1), and a diagnostic is entered in myFitness without the results (para. 3.8.3). Diagnostics are taken during the current cycle, no earlier than one month before your scheduled assessment, and the WHtR can't be decoupled for one (para. 3.4.4). With two logged in 365 days you must accept the result as official (para. 3.8.2).

When is my first PT test after having a baby?

For a pregnancy of 20 weeks or more, the post-pregnancy PFRA is due in the 13th month after delivery: a March 2026 delivery means an April 2027 due month (AFMAN 36-2905 para. 4.1.4). For a pregnancy of fewer than 20 weeks, medical providers decide under AFI 48-133. You can't take a PFRA while pregnant (para. 4.1.4).

How often do Guard and Reserve members take the PT test?

Once every 12 months (AFMAN 36-2905 paras. 3.4.2 and 3.10). An Unsatisfactory is still due again in 3 months, the same as for the Regular Air Force (Table 3.3). ARC members get one diagnostic PFRA in any 365 days, no earlier than one month before the annual scheduled assessment (paras. 3.8.1 and 3.8.2). Traditional Reservists and Drill Status Guardsmen may take the WHtR at the prior UTA/RSD but must finish the whole PFRA within 60 days or by the next drill, whichever comes first (para. 3.1.1).

How early can I take the waist measurement before my PT test?

At least one and no more than five duty days before the other components. You can also take it on the same day, but you can't be directed to (AFMAN 36-2905 paras. 3.1.1, 3.4.3 and 3.15.4.1). If you don't finish the rest within the window, the PFRA is Did Not Finish and you need a full reassessment (paras. 3.4.3 and 3.15.4.1). The AFMAN doesn't define "duty day", so check with your UFPM or FAC.

myFitness and myFSS show different due dates. Which one is right?

myFitness, which you reach through myFSS, is the only authorized system to schedule and score PFRAs (AFMAN 36-2905 para. 7.1), and you take the PFRA in your assigned unit assessment or the date or month myFitness assigns (para. 3.2.4). Your UFPM sets and updates your due date (para. 2.28.4), so if a date looks wrong, ask your UFPM to check it.

Does a PCS change my PT test due date?

Your PFRA must stay current through your report-not-later-than date (RNLTD); if it would expire first, you test before leaving your losing duty station, a rule that doesn't apply to AFR members (AFMAN 36-2905 para. 4.3.1). After you arrive you're allowed the Acclimatization Period to complete a PFRA (para. 4.3.1.1). If you PCS during an Acclimatization Period, an existing composite exemption is extended through another one from the day after you arrive (para. 4.3.1.2).

Do I have to take the PT test if I'm retiring or separating?

Not once you have an approved separation or retirement order dated within 12 months and it's uploaded to myFitness (AFMAN 36-2905 para. 4.1.7). If the order is cancelled, you test on your original cycle; if that month has already passed, you're due after an Acclimatization Period following the cancellation (para. 4.1.7).

What happens to my due date if my PT test is invalidated or stopped by weather?

If your commander invalidates the PFRA after an MTF evaluation of an illness or injury, your new due month is the calendar month after the invalidation date (AFMAN 36-2905 paras. 3.12.6 and 3.12.7). If FAC/UFAC staff decide extenuating circumstances such as severe weather stopped the test and it wasn't your fault, the due month moves to the following month (para. 3.5.1). Base-wide suspensions for an AQI over 100, wildfires or similar are different: the wing commander sets new due months (para. 4.4.2).

When is my first PT test at my first duty station?

At your unit's next scheduled PFRA or within 2 months after you arrive (AFMAN 36-2905 para. 6.1.1). Air Reserve Component members are due within 2 months after arrival. Fitness tests in BMT, tech school, OTS, the Academy and other accession programs aren't official PFRAs and aren't recorded in myFitness (para. 6.1.2).
