Know Your Target First
The strength component is worth 15 points ¶3.7.1, and the rep thresholds move with age and sex: a man under 25 needs 30 push-ups in 1 minute just to reach the starred chart minimum and 67 for full points, and the counts come down in older groups. Missing the minimum makes the whole assessment Unsatisfactory, whatever your other scores ¶3.6.1. Look up your exact numbers on the push-up standards charts, then aim well above the minimum: the mock PT test shows what each extra rep is worth in points.
Form That Gets Counted
Your counter counts only correct repetitions, tells you what you are doing wrong, and repeats your last correct number when a rep doesn’t count ¶A2.3.4. Train the standard exactly, so the reps you practice are the reps you get credit for.
1-minute push-up
- Start: palms or fists on the floor, hands slightly wider than shoulder width, elbows fully extended. Feet no more than 12 inches apart, not supported, braced or crossed. Rigid from head to heel ¶A2.3.1.
- One rep: lower until your upper arms are at least parallel to the floor, then return to the up position with your arms fully extended but not locked ¶A2.3.2.
- Bottom: your chest may touch the floor but not rest or bounce on it. A rep that doesn’t reach parallel doesn’t count ¶A2.3.3.
- Resting: only in the up position, where you may lift a hand or foot or bridge or bow your back. Resting in the down position ends the event ¶A2.3.3.
2-minute hand-release push-up
- Start: in the up position, hands flat on the ground with your index fingers inside the outer edges of your shoulders ¶A2.4.1.
- Down: bend your elbows and lower your body until your chest, hips and thighs touch down at the same time ¶A2.4.3.
- Release: without moving your head, body or legs, extend both arms out from your body until they are fully extended and form a 90-degree angle with your trunk at the shoulders, hands off the ground ¶A2.4.3.
- Up: bring your hands back under your shoulders, flat with index fingers inside the outer edges of the shoulders, and push your whole body up as a single unit to full elbow extension, keeping a generally straight line from head to ankles ¶A2.4.2¶A2.4.3.
- Resting: only in the up position, as for the push-up. Resting in the down position ends the event ¶A2.4.4.
Push-Ups or Hand-Release Push-Ups?
You choose one option for the strength component ¶3.1.2.2¶3.15.8. The hand-release push-up gives you 2 minutes instead of 1, but its chart counts aren’t simply lower. Full points always take fewer hand-release reps, while the minimum is higher for women under 35:
| Group | Push-ups, 1 min (minimum – full points) | Hand-release, 2 min (minimum – full points) |
|---|---|---|
| Male, under 25 | 30 – 67 | 27 – 52 |
| Male, 30–34 | 26 – 60 | 23 – 48 |
| Male, 40–44 | 21 – 52 | 19 – 44 |
| Female, under 25 | 15 – 50 | 17 – 42higher minimum |
| Female, 25–29 | 14 – 47 | 15 – 40higher minimum |
| Female, 30–34 | 12 – 44 | 13 – 38higher minimum |
| Female, 35–39 | 11 – 42 | 11 – 36 |
| Female, 40–44 | 10 – 39 | 9 – 34 |

Train Push-Ups With the Playbook
The Air Force’s Warfighter’s Fitness Playbook 2.0 says someone training for the fitness assessment focuses on muscular endurance, “think of the 1-minute max pushup test”: sets of 12 or more reps, 2–3 sets, at an effort of 5.5–6.5 out of 10, with 30 seconds’ rest or less Playbook p.13.
Scale it to your level. The Playbook’s push-up ladder runs high plank hold, incline push-up, push-up, decline push-up, pause decline push-up Playbook F1. If standard push-ups are too hard, do them against a wall Playbook p.21.
Push-up work in the Playbook programs:
| Program | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12-Week Program circuit A1 | Push-ups 15 s work / 15 s rest (weeks 1–3) | Push-ups 20 s / 15 s (weeks 4–7) | Push-ups and HR push-ups 30 s / 20 s (weeks 8–12) |
| Hybrid Day pyramid A4 | Push-up pyramid 1-10-1 | Push-up pyramid 1-12-1 | Push-up pyramid 1-14-1 |
| Bodyweight Day A2 | Push-ups ×8–12 | Push-ups and HR push-ups ×10–15 | Push-ups and HR push-ups ×15–20 |
| Metabolic Interval Day A3 | Push-ups 20 s on / 40 s off | Push-ups 25 s on / 35 s off | HR push-ups 30 s on / 30 s off |
How often: AFMAN 36-2905’s Attachment 7 guidelines recommend muscular training 2–3 days a week, without working the same muscle groups on consecutive days, and at least one set of each exercise to muscular fatigue ¶A7.2.2¶A7.2.4. The training plan builder puts a full Playbook program, push-ups included, on dates that finish on your test day.
On Test Day: Stay Inside the Rules
- Rest at the top, never at the bottom. When your arms tire, pause in the up position; you may lift a hand or foot or bridge or bow your back there. Resting in the down position ends the event ¶A2.3.3¶A2.4.4.
- Listen to the counter. If a rep isn’t counted, the counter tells you why and repeats your last correct number, so fix the fault on the next rep ¶A2.3.4.
- Breathe normally; don’t hold your breath ¶A2.3.4.
- Warm up before the assessment ¶3.15.12.2, and expect at least 5 minutes’ rest after the previous component ¶3.15.10.
