- AFMAN 36-2905 does not set BMT fitness standards. New accessions, BMT included, “complete fitness programs and standards of their school/program via training cadre” ¶6.1.2.
- A test taken at BMT is not an official PFRA and is not recorded in myFitness. Your first official PFRA comes at your first duty station ¶6.1.1, 6.1.2.
- The only official BMT preparation document we found is the 37th Training Wing’s “Are You Ready for Basic Training?”, dated 7 May 2015, which predates the PFRA. We found no current, public BMT fitness standard, so this page does not publish BMT graduation numbers.
Who Sets BMT Fitness Standards?
BMT does. AFMAN 36-2905 (24 March 2026, formerly DAFMAN 36-2905) lists Basic Military Training first among the new accessions that “must complete fitness programs and standards of their school/program via training cadre” ¶6.1.2. The same paragraph adds that PFRAs not administered by your duty station’s fitness assessment cell “will not be considered official or recorded in myFitness.”
BMT does test fitness. An af.mil photo caption shows a trainee running “her official physical fitness test during week five of Basic Military Training” on 23 December 2024, under the old test (af.mil, 24 Sep 2025). How BMT tests in 2026, and what it takes to graduate, is set by the program. Your recruiter is the right person to ask.
Train for the Test You'll Take at Your First Duty Station
Whatever BMT asks of you, the operational PFRA is the test that goes on your record, and you will meet it within months of leaving basic training. These are the AFPC chart values for the under-25 age group, where most recruits fall:
| Event | Male under 25: minimum / full points | Female under 25: minimum / full points |
|---|---|---|
| Push-ups (1 min) | 30 / 67 | 15 / 50 |
| Sit-ups (1 min) | 33 / 58 | 29 / 54 |
| 2-mile run | 19:45 / 13:25 | 25:23 / 15:30 |
| 20 m HAMR (shuttles) | 42 / 87 | 21 / 68 |
AFPC PFRA charts, effective 1 March 2026 (corrected 17 March 2026). Below a minimum the event scores zero, and the minimums alone don’t add up to a passing 75 ¶3.7.4. Body composition is scored too: a waist-to-height ratio of 0.49 or less earns the full 20 points, and it has no minimum ¶3.7.1. Other age groups are on the score charts.
Preparation Targets Before You Ship
These are our preparation targets, not official BMT standards. They aim at the PFRA because it is the one standard that is published and that you will certainly face.
- Run: 2 miles without stopping, then work toward the 2-mile minimum for your age group. Cardio is 50 of the 100 PFRA points ¶3.7.1.
- Push-ups: past the chart minimum for your age group, counting only reps an administrator would count.
- Sit-ups or plank: past the chart minimum for your age group. Core is worth 15 points, and a missed minimum fails the PFRA ¶3.6.1.
- Waist: measure your waist-to-height ratio the official way and know your number. It is worth 20 points ¶3.7.1 and changes over weeks, not days.
Check your numbers with the mock PT test using your age group. Arriving at Satisfactory or better on the PFRA charts means BMT PT builds on a base instead of creating one.
Watch for Old Numbers
Prep guides built around the retired 1.5-mile run still circulate. If a BMT guide quotes 1.5-mile times, it was written for the test that was replaced in 2026; see what changed. The official 2015 BMT document above also predates the PFRA, so treat any fitness numbers in it as out of date.
- 2026 Air Force PT standards: the full component-by-component requirements.
- PT test minimums: the floors you must clear on every event.
- Training plan: a progressive plan you can start well before you ship.
