Two Tests, Two Audiences
“AFROTC PFA” refers to two related but different assessments, and most confusion online comes from mixing them up:
| Scholarship Applicants (HSSP) | Enrolled Cadets | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | High school seniors applying for the AFROTC scholarship | Cadets at a detachment |
| Where | Self-administered locally with a proctor | On campus, run by detachment cadre |
| Events | 1-min push-ups · 1-min sit-ups · 2.0-mile run | Current active-duty Air Force assessment |
| When | During the application cycle | Each semester |
| Stakes | Part of the scholarship selection composite | Good standing, field training, commissioning |
Enrolled cadets test under the same standards as the active-duty force, so the 2026 Air Force PT standards and this site’s PT calculator apply to them directly.
What Changed for 2026-2027: The 2-Mile Run
Starting with the 2026-2027 application year, the scholarship PFA run distance increased from 1.5 miles to 2.0 miles, matching the cardio standard the Air Force adopted for the 2026 PFRA. If you trained against older 1.5-mile charts, recalibrate: the extra half mile punishes going out too fast and rewards a steadier aerobic pace.
Scoring: 75 to Pass, 90+ to Compete
- Composite of 75 or higher passes. Points from push-ups, sit-ups, and the run combine into a single score.
- 90 or higher earns an Excellent rating — the realistic target for competitive scholarship applicants, since fitness is one of the few composite inputs you can still improve late in the cycle.
- Per-event minimums are unforgiving. Missing the minimum on any single event fails the assessment even with a passing composite — you cannot buy back a failed run with extra push-ups.
- Exact point tables vary by gender and are published in the application portal for each cycle; treat any third-party table (including ours) as a training reference, not the scoring authority.
Fitness is commonly estimated at roughly 5% of the scholarship selection composite — small, but it is a hard gate, and it is the cheapest composite points you can earn: unlike your GPA or test scores, you can still move it in the months before you test.
Proctor Rules for the Scholarship PFA
The scholarship PFA is self-administered locally rather than at a military facility. A proctor — typically a school official, coach, or JROTC instructor — administers and certifies the test. Per current guidance, AFROTC is the only ROTC branch that also allows a parent or guardian to administer it. Rules can shift between application cycles, so confirm the proctor requirements shown in your application portal before you schedule the test.
Run the test exactly to protocol — timed events to the second, full-rep form — because detachments retest cadets against real standards once you arrive, and a padded application score only sets you up to struggle at field training prep.
For Enrolled Cadets: Your Charts Are the Active-Duty Charts
Once you are in the program, your semester assessment follows the current Department of the Air Force standards — the same 2026 PFRA scoring this site covers in depth. The resources cadets use most:
- USAF PT Calculator — estimate your composite before test day.
- Full score charts — printable point tables for every component.
- PT test minimums — the component floors you cannot dip below.
- How to pass the PT test — test-day strategy and preparation roadmap.
